How did four film students end up doing such fresh, danceable garage rock on stage?
For the same reason that Arnold ended up working as a security man in a discotheque, because someone had broken his heart…
What exactly inspired you to choose the name Mujeres?
The real reason is bullshit, so we'll just say is a way of thanking our mothers for having brought us into this world…
Your name is everywhere and it seems like there's a record label behind it all, but the truth is that you just have released an album and a 7" and for a long time you have just had a demo. Why so long?
Well, I don't think we've spent so long with just a demo, I mean, it's been a year after finishing it and we already have our first album in the stores. The 7" was released shortly before the album and the truth is that we'd have liked to release two 7" instead of one before that, but you know, sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you. There are things which are waiting to be released and they will soon be out. And as far as that 'lethargy' goes, we have in fact done many things, such as playing live a lot and learning how to play better.
Do you sing in English because you want to go international?
Oh, it's basically because we want Natalie Portman to understand what we are saying. We know no one is really interested in the girl, but for us she is our TRUE love.
Where would you like to play?
At home, for example. We like small parties with a lot of sweat and fridges full of ice cubes and bottles of rum.
Which shows do you remember as the best and the worst so far?
Our best and worst show was in a small town in Huesca. Those dammed yokels gave us weird things and our act was pathetically horrifying. It was sublime and sickening. Majestic and embarrassing. The beauty and terror of a hurricane… Oops, that was a bit too much…
What do you think about being constantly compared to the Black Lips?
It's more the media's fault than our fault. You know, you start and then the evil domino does the rest. We think there are more than 50 bands now we could be compared to. But anyway, being compared to the Black Lips is flattering for us.
Which are your closest influences?
Old bands such as the Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, Sonics, Los Saicos... New bands such as Jacuzzi Boys, Strange Boys, Dead Ghosts, the In the red bands, Goner, Hozac, Crypt, Rob's House, Douchemaster, Slovenly...
Your favourite hotspot?
We used to meet at El amigo, a bar with a nice atmosphere where they serve shawarmas and stuff like that. It's on Joaquin Costa, in Barcelona. We also go to La Farándula, on Paral·lel, which is the alternative to the cheap drinks we used to have at a seedy bar on Nou de la Rambla, in front of the Bagdad. Now the place has changed and we don't like it that much. Then Can Culleretes is the best place to have lunch on Saturdays. It's near Plaza Reial.
