The headline says it all: actress Scarlett Johansson has just set up a new band called The Singles. The news is quite surprising, although it’s true this isn’t Johansson’s first foray into music. Tom Waits or Pete Yorn can give a good account of it.

Scarlett has surrounded herself by good friends and best musicians: Este Haim, Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris and Julia Haltigan. And as if the musical cast around her semi-raspy voice wasn’t enough, the producer behind The Singles is none other than Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), who in addition to helping with the just-released single ‘Candy’ (listen to it below), was also in charge of designing the cover and of releasing it on the Federal Prism label. But what does ‘Candy’ sound like? According to Scarlett: “The idea was to make super-pop dance music written and performed by girls… I love Grimes, I love Bangles, I love The Go-Go’s. I wanted it to be like those bands: ultra-pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke.”

So ‘Candy’ sounds like sweetened synth-pop with 80s airs, and The Singles sound like they will release a single from time to time to have fun. We sort of like Johansson’s sugary ideas to entertain us. But, judge for yourself…
