An intense journey through the visual diversity of India, through 200 objects from different fields
Design, like art, must be understood and judged in a specific ideological, aesthetic and ritual context. In fact Sār means ‘essence’, and that’s what the authors aim to reflect by selecting the shape and the use of tactile objects. The introduction talks about the how the development of an Indian identity and language was encouraged by nationalists such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Western designers Charles and Ray Eames.
Sār: The Essence of Indian Design by Swapnaa Tamhane and Rashmi Varma is relased by Phaidon on June 1st.
