Are there really souls who can resist the magical power of chocolate? Is there anyone in this world who doesn’t appreciate such delicacy? Surely the answer is yes, to which I can only say there are crazy people and exceptions everywhere. For those who love chocolate in all its versions, shapes, senses, textures and flavors, we know for a fact that in these latitudes there is a kind of magician who does real wonders. We’re referring, of course, to master chocolatier Oriol Balaguer.

The very first thing that attracts your attention about La Xocolatería by Oriol Balaguer, and this says a lot in its favour, is the sense of smell.

There are Oriol Balaguer chocolate boutiques all over Barcelona selling a great assortment of chocolate delicacies. But the best is yet to come. Now, along with his partner Ana Zaragoza, Balaguer has opened a sort of contemporary chocolate bar at the Born where, besides having a take-away service (don’t miss their great invention to carry chocolate con churros with just one hand), you can sit to taste any of their chocolate offerings in an unbeatable atmosphere. La Xocolatería by Oriol Balaguer is an essential hotspot for all sweet-addicts and also for those who are less so (they will end up becoming regulars…).

The very first thing that attracts your attention about La Xocolatería by Oriol Balaguer, and this says a lot in its favour, is the sense of smell. A few meters from the store your nose becomes alert and, like a clueless zombie, you start following that mesmerizing smell of freshly made chocolate. The ample, airy, high-ceilinged space boasts a lovely decor with a colonial atmosphere in keeping with the character of cocoa, the work of none other than Lázaro Rosa ViolánLa Xocolatería has two distinct spaces. At the entrance there is a counter full of delicatessen and Balaguer’s greatest hit, the grifo de chocolate, and a bar with stools. At the back there is a room with a giant square marble table that invites us to sit down, enjoy our cravings and chat quietly.

If at this point you still haven’t started salivating, in this chocolate factory—in the most idyllic sense of the term—customers can choose to design their own chocolate bar or have a personalized ice cream with different toppings. Obviously, your hot chocolate with churros seems like a superb choice. Waffles (the best I’ve ever tasted), crepes and croissants also stand out for their flavor and texture. Now we’re sure your mouth water, but this is not all! What about trying a cake, a chocolate, a lollipop or a cup of black, while or milked cocoa?
