If you grew up in the 1990s, you will probably have the legendary Nirvana cover for Nevermind ingrained in your mind, the photo of the baby under water following a dollar. The author of the picture was Austin (Texas) photographer Kirk Weddle. A few months after the launch of the iconic album Weddle was commissioned to carry out a photo shoot with the band and came up with the great idea of trying to imitate baby photos, but this time with the band in the water.

If you grew up in the 1990s, you will probably have the legendary Nirvana cover for Nevermind ingrained in your mind

There are plenty of anecdotes about this shooting, for example that the band was appointed at 10am. It was cold as hell and Kurt was anything but a water lover. The three band members, Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, were extremely exhausted after several days of concerts. Incredibly and against all odds, Kirk Weddle -back then one of the best underwater photographers in the industry, convince them to get into the pool to finish the photo session. The result was some 200 images of which we’ve only seen a few. Now Kirk Weddle is selling prints of the photos he took of one of the most influential and iconic rock bands from the 90s. Whether you’re a fan of Nirvana or not, the underwater series is priceless. Get your prints (limited edition of 50 signed and numbered copies) on Modern Rock Gallery.
